It took an incredible winning streak capped by a decisive victory over their geographical rivals, but the Canadian entry at the IIHF World Hockey Championship has secured top spot in Group A heading into the elimination round. That impressive accomplishment sets up a quarterfinal showdown Thursday with a Switzerland team that finished with a decent 4-3-0 record, but posted an impressive +13 goal differential in a challenging Group B.

World Hockey Championship Odds and Betting Analysis The Canadians are comfortable -524 favourites (down from -752 at the open) in Thursday’s Round of 8 matchup after rolling to wins in their final six round-robin games, capped by an impressive 3-0 victory over the United States. Canada’s +25 goal differential so far in the tournament is tied for second-best in the competition with the Czech Republic, behind only Russia (+29). But bettors should keep in mind that the teams have split their previous four meetings in international play. From a totals perspective, oddsmakers aren’t expecting this one to produce much offence with the number set at 5.5. And with good reason: Switzerland held opponents to just two goals per game in Group B action, while Canada’s foes scored just 11 total goals in seven games – with three of those coming in the Canadians’ tournament-opening loss to Finland. The teams have produced fewer than six goals in four of their previous five meetings overall.

Team Canada The Canadians are no longer the favourites to win the tournament – that title belongs to the Russians, who are listed at +125 compared to Canada at +275 – but the Group A leaders have been one of the most complete teams in the competition after that opening-game defeat to Finland. But they’ll be missing one of their key offensive pieces, after team scoring leader Anthony Mantha was given a one-game ban for an illegal hit against the U.S. 2019 IIHF Men's World Championship

If the Swiss have any hope of upending the favoured Canadians, they’ll almost certainly need to be more prolific on the power play. Despite averaging nearly four goals per game in round-robin play, Switzerland converted just four of its 35 man-advantage opportunities over that stretch, good for an 11.4-percent success rate that ranks 13th out of 16 teams. Canada, by comparison, is making good on nearly 53 percent of its power-play chances.
